This is the wrong kind of bike for that bike rack. The owner left a note that he was 88 and was there for treatment at our clinic, as if that would somehow give him a pass. It didn’t work. He got a ticket anyway. Still, I gotta hand it to him for creative laziness.

I actually do this all the time. I save a car parking spot, and it IS technically a bicycle.

Exactly. That was on my mind when I wrote. :)

I don’t know whether to be impressed or terrified of an 88 year old on a motorcycle. Both I guess. That said, if you can ride a bike that that I would assume you are in decent enough condition to shuffle from the parking lot to the building easily enough.

Nice try though.

I always park my motorcycle on sidewalks (or those little corners) in full parking lots. I figure it saves a space for a car. Not one ticket in 10 years. Though a lady did yell at me once.

Yeah, if he was telling the truth. But hey, maybe it worked for him before.

One thing I ask you to remember: those little corners are often flanking a handicap spot, because they are at the end of a row. Plenty of times I have found a motorcycle blocking me from using a spot because it prevents me from getting my wheelchair out, or if it was done while I’m in a store, it prevents me from getting into my car. So, even if you don’t get ticketed, please make sure your improvised parking doesn’t prevent someone else like me from parking legally.

A very good point. I never park my motorcycle near a handicap spot. Actually, I’d like to ask you a question. At the place I ride to lunch for, the only pole thin enough to lock my bicycle up to is the pole where the handicap sign is mounted. The sign is up on the curb, and where my bike is is not blocking the ramp built into the curb. Do you think that this could still be in the way? From my perspective I’m not blocking anything but since you’re here and actually have to deal with this kind of thing, maybe you can enlighten me and I can potentially stop a behavior that is harming people.

Here’s a crappy picture from google maps.

meanwhile in college, we had (very crowded) designated motorcycle parking and these damn hipsters with electric bikes would be taking up spots. NO JERKS, IF I CAN PICK IT UP AND THROW IT AT THE BIKE RACK THAT IS WHERE IT GOES, THESE SPOTS ARE FOR THE GROWNUPS

It’s a bike rack. that’s a bike. unless it’s posted as non-motorized, he’s right. I would fight the ticket. to be fair, if he’s 88 and still riding, he’s got the time to sit in court and fight the ticket.

Bike in a bike rack. Don’t see the issue. I do it too. to be honest I frequently douche-park (tm) all the time. and glare at people. mostly when they get near my lawn.

I always liked the bike parking at Harley in York, PA. they clearly reminded you what went there and what didn’t. and it was most of the front of the parking lot too

There’s a special place in hell for someone who writes a parking ticket for an eighty eight year old who’s still riding a motorcycle. Also, you’re not lazy when you take shortcuts at eighty eight years old. It’s called being eighty eight years old. If I can I always try to park on the sidewalk in order to save a spot for a car. Also, if you live somewhere hot asphalt gets really soft in the heat, and can cause your kick stand to sink in, possibly tipping your bike over. People also don’t see bikes in spots a lot and run into them. Dude was being smart, not lazy. Never call an eighty eight year-old lazy.

I’m trying to visualize what you describe and thinking of the most mobility-impaired person who would use the spot. The crucial things are: 1) the person must be able to open their door all the way or lower their ramp and still have room to get their chair out (that is what the cross-hatched area is needed for), and 2) she must be able to get around the car and curb to get to the ramp or cutout. If you are not creating a barrier to either of those two things, and it sounds like you are not, then I don’t see a problem.

And thanks for asking!

I guess it all comes down to legal definitions. If he’s lucky, maybe the judge in traffic court rides.

And there’s a special place in society for people who think that surviving long enough entitles them to ignore the rules.

It’s called traffic court. :P

If I was eighty eight I would ignore every and all parking tickets. It’s not about entitlement, it’s about knowing you’re all but guaranteed to be seeing your last decade on earth. Hopefully the guy has lived a full life, and thus doesn’t give a shit about whether others are obeying “the rules”.

Okay, I really didn’t think so but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn something. I’m not blocking the hatched area or the ramp so it sounds like I’m safe.
